Harris Health System Breaks Ground on $1.6 Billion Hospital in Northeast Houston
Harris Health System has officially kicked off construction on a groundbreaking new hospital in Northeast Houston, set to revolutionize healthcare in the region. The $1.6 billion project will see the development of a state-of-the-art Level I trauma center, slated to open its doors in late 2028.
Replacing the aging Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Hospital, the new 12-story facility is a key component of Harris Health’s ambitious $2.9 billion investment plan. This comprehensive strategy includes the addition of a new Level-I capable trauma hospital, the renovation of the existing LBJ facility, the expansion of Ben Taub Hospital’s capacity, and the construction of three new health centers across Northwest, Southwest, and Eastern Harris County.
Harris Health System President and CEO Esmaeil Porsa emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “The addition of a Level I-capable trauma center will be the first of its kind in Harris County outside of the Texas Medical Center and is vital in meeting the growing needs of our region, as is the expansion of our primary care platform with new clinics.”
Spanning approximately 1.3 million square feet, the new hospital will feature 390 private rooms with the option to add 60 more, a rooftop helipad, and 15 operating rooms, including an advanced hybrid operating room. Additionally, the partnership with UTHealth Houston will provide an expanded clinical training site for McGovern Medical School’s residents and faculty.
Harris Health System Board Chair Andrea Caracostis expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “This is the beginning of a monumental improvement in our medical infrastructure to provide state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional healthcare for all Harris County residents. The expansion of this hospital is way overdue and will go a long way to helping us better meet the needs of our staff, our patients, and our Harris County residents.”
The construction of the new hospital marks a significant milestone in Harris Health System’s mission to enhance healthcare services in the region. With a focus on innovation and excellence, this project is set to transform the healthcare landscape in Northeast Houston for years to come.
