Doctors in the city’s hospital system are advocating for equal pay

Residents at NYC Health + Hospitals Demand Fair Salaries Comparable to Private-Sector Physicians

The residents of New York City Health + Hospitals are demanding fair pay in a new contract negotiation with the public hospital system. Nearly 2,300 residents represented by SEIU’s Committee of Interns and Residents are seeking salaries comparable to those earned by physicians at private safety net hospitals.

Currently, the residents start at a salary of $66,247, which has not seen a raise since March 2020. The city hospital system has proposed a $76,984 salary for first-year physicians starting next year, but this would still leave them earning less than their counterparts at private hospitals.

Residents have been holding speak-outs and events to demand fair raises and increased investment in hospital equipment and research. They emphasized the importance of their work in serving uninsured and low-income patients, including homeless New Yorkers and asylum-seekers.

The residents are calling for equal pay for equal work and highlighted the challenges they face, including long shifts and financial stress. They are also seeking support from Mayor Adams to ensure fair compensation for their vital work in the healthcare system.

Negotiations are ongoing, with NYC H+H spokesperson Christopher Miller expressing gratitude for the residents’ critical role in patient care. The goal is to reach an agreement that is fair to the residents, the hospital system, and the city’s taxpayers. The residents are determined to secure a contract that recognizes their dedication and the essential services they provide to the community.
