Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato Celebrates Grand Opening of $155 Million Hospital Expansion

Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minnesota, recently celebrated the grand opening of its $155 million hospital expansion after two years of construction. The new facility includes a state-of-the-art bed tower with 121 additional hospital beds and various other improvements.

According to Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, the expanded and modernized bed tower not only adds capacity to the Mankato campus but also introduces new capabilities. With digitally integrated tools and flexible care spaces, the hospital aims to enhance collaboration across Mayo Clinic sites and provide a seamless care experience for patients and their families.

The project includes a new and expanded Intensive Care Unit, Progressive Care Unit, Medical-Surgical Unit, and Family Birth Center. Technological advancements such as telehealth capabilities and digital technology have been incorporated to support innovative care models and improve patient outcomes.

Prathibha Varkey, M.B.B.S., president of Mayo Clinic Health System, stated that the new hospital tower aligns with their Bold. Forward. strategy to establish Mayo Clinic Health System as a Category of One in community and rural healthcare by 2030. The goal is to provide a compassionate, seamless, and integrated digital and physical Mayo experience for patients.

James Hebl, M.D., regional vice president of Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota, emphasized that the new hospital will ensure timely access to care while keeping patients close to home for routine medical care, advanced surgical procedures, or emergency care.

The modernized hospital layout includes various units across different floors, such as Cardiac Medical and Progressive Care Unit, Pediatric General Care Unit, General Medical Care Unit, Behavioral Health Unit, and more.

Travis Paul, regional chair of administration at Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota, mentioned that the new space has greatly improved workflow and efficiencies, enhancing the patient experience with interactive systems and private rooms.

Mayo Clinic Health System operates in 44 communities with 53 clinics, 16 hospitals, and other facilities in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The combination of community-based providers and Mayo Clinic resources allows patients in the region to receive high-quality healthcare close to home.
