Yale New Haven Health’s Acquisition of Waterbury, Manchester Memorial, and Rockville General Hospitals: Public Hearing and Proposed Deal
The Office of Health Strategy recently held a public hearing regarding Yale New Haven Health’s application to acquire Waterbury, Manchester Memorial, and Rockville General hospitals from Prospect Medical Holdings. This acquisition has the potential to financially stabilize the hospitals and enhance the quality of care available to the communities they serve.
Yale New Haven’s CEO, Christopher O’Connor, highlighted the benefits of the acquisition, including improved access to Yale physicians, enhanced quality of care, and more generous financial assistance policies for patients. Additionally, Yale has committed to recognizing all unions, collective bargaining agreements, and retaining all employees at the acquired hospitals.
Despite concerns about healthcare consolidation leading to higher prices and service cuts, O’Connor emphasized Yale’s track record of providing benefits to the hospitals it acquires. The proposed acquisition would involve a $435 million investment by Yale New Haven, with plans to consolidate some inpatient services between Manchester Memorial and Rockville General.
Members of the public overwhelmingly supported the proposed deal, citing Yale’s resources as a much-needed source of stability and high-quality care. Testimonies from employees highlighted issues with Prospect Medical Holdings, with concerns about poor management practices impacting patient care and employee morale.
Senator Saud Anwar expressed optimism about Yale’s involvement, stating that the community sees it as a blessing. He also raised concerns about Prospect’s business model, noting previous financial mismanagement and patient safety violations within the network.
Overall, the proposed acquisition by Yale New Haven Health presents an opportunity for a fresh start for the hospitals involved, with the potential for improved care and stability in the healthcare system.
