Hospital Official in Trouble After Hit and Run Incident: Police and Corruption Allegations emerge
Finance Department Official at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Involved in Hit and Run Accident
An official working in the finance department at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in western Uganda is currently in hot water after allegedly being involved in a hit and run accident that resulted in the death of one person. Another individual reportedly sustained injuries in the incident.
According to a police source attached to Mbarara Central Police, the incident took place last Sunday. The hospital official, known as Franks, was said to be returning from a night out at Memory Pub in Mbarara town with his drinking buddies. Franks was allegedly driving a government vehicle, a Toyota pickup belonging to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, in the early hours of the morning.
Eyewitnesses, including a bodaboda cyclist, claimed that Franks struck two individuals, resulting in the death of one person. Despite driving off from the scene, the eyewitness was able to identify Franks’ vehicle and knew him as a senior official at the hospital.
Following the incident, Franks reportedly took his vehicle to a garage in Mbarara for repairs. However, CCTV footage captured the entire event, leading to suspicions of a cover-up involving some police officers who allegedly accepted bribes from Franks to overlook the case.
Reports suggest that disagreements arose among the police officers involved in the cover-up, leading to the leak of information to the victims’ families. Franks is said to be attempting to settle the matter privately with the families to avoid drawing attention from top officials at Mbarara Central Police Station.
The victims’ families are considering involving the Office of the Resident District Commissioner and petitioning the Minister of Internal Affairs if the police fail to take action. Cases of hit and run accidents are reportedly on the rise in Uganda, with concerns about the low rate of perpetrators being brought to justice due to corruption within the police force.
This publication will continue to follow this developing story to ensure justice for the bereaved family. Attempts to reach out to the police, Franks, and Mbarara Referral Hospital officials for comments have been made.
