Walgreens Expands Specialty Pharmacy Services, Invests in Gene- and Cell-Therapy

Walgreens is making significant strides in expanding its specialty pharmacy services, with a focus on providing care for patients with complex, chronic conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, and Crohn’s disease. The company is also investing in gene- and cell-therapy services to further enhance its offerings.

One of the key developments is the opening of an 18,000 square-foot Gene and Cell Services Pharmacy and Innovation Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This center will manage the complexity of the supply chain, logistics, financing, as well as clinical- and social-needs management for patients requiring specialized treatments.

In addition to this new center, Walgreens has four central specialty pharmacies that specialize in oncology and rare/orphan conditions, along with nearly 300 community-based specialty pharmacies nationwide. This extensive network allows patients to access specialty medications quickly and conveniently, along with services such as injection training, medication side-effect management, and financial assistance coordination.

The company’s decision to rebrand AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy as Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy reflects its commitment to providing convenient access to hard-to-find medications and critical adherence support. This integrated care model aims to help payers better manage specialty costs while offering patients access to clinicians with disease state expertise, nutritionists, and care nurses.

With specialty medications accounting for over 50% of prescription drug spend in the United States, Walgreens’ expansion into specialty pharmacy services comes at a crucial time. The company’s focus on providing comprehensive care and support for patients with complex conditions is expected to drive cost savings and efficiencies in care, ultimately benefiting both patients and healthcare providers.

Overall, Walgreens’ investment in specialty pharmacy services and gene- and cell-therapy capabilities underscores its commitment to expanding the role of its pharmacy teams and providing high-quality care for patients with complex medical needs.
