Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida Launches SEA STAR Program and Introduces Sensory-Friendly Ambulance
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida has made a groundbreaking announcement that is set to revolutionize pediatric care in the region. The hospital has been designated as the first Certified Autism Center™ in Florida and has introduced the area’s first sensory-friendly ambulance as part of its new SEA STAR program.
The SEA STAR program, which stands for Safety Education Awareness, Sensory Training – Autism Readiness, aims to provide specialized care for pediatric patients with Autism Spectrum and Sensory Disorders (ASD). This program includes a comprehensive review of hospital policies and procedures to align with sensory-friendly services, as well as the identification of locations throughout the facilities to best serve individuals living with Autism.
One of the key components of the SEA STAR program is the Certified Autism Center™ certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This certification equips hospital staff and management with the necessary skills to effectively treat autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals, addressing unique needs in communication, pain perception, and treatment approaches.
To achieve the CAC designation, over 80% of the hospital’s physicians, nurses, and patient-facing staff underwent specialized training and certification to enhance their understanding of autism and communication techniques. Additionally, IBCCES conducted an on-site assessment to provide further support, recommendations, and tools to improve care and accessibility for autistic patients and their families.
Alyssa Bostwick, chief nursing and operations executive at Golisano Children’s Hospital, expressed her excitement about the new program, stating, “We are thrilled to implement a diverse range of therapeutic tools for patients with autism and other sensory disorders. Our team worked tirelessly to make this a reality, and it’s a testament to their dedication to the highest level of compassionate care.”
In addition to becoming the first Certified Autism Center™ in Florida, Golisano Children’s Hospital has introduced the region’s first sensory-friendly ambulance. This ambulance is specially designed to improve comfort, reduce stress, and ensure safe and supportive transportation for pediatric patients with ASD.
The sensory-friendly ambulance is equipped with a range of therapeutic sensory devices, including noise-reducing insulation, dimmer lighting, fidget spinner distraction items, and a vertical bubble machine, among other amenities. These features work together to minimize anxiety and create a calming atmosphere for patients during transportation to the hospital.
The introduction of the sensory-friendly ambulance and the implementation of the SEA STAR program highlight Golisano Children’s Hospital’s commitment to providing inclusive and specialized care for patients with autism and sensory disorders. This groundbreaking initiative sets a commendable standard for healthcare facilities in the region and beyond.
