Sudbury News: Redevelopment of Former Hospital Still Without Set Timelines

Redevelopment of Former Hospital in Greater Sudbury Expected to Take Less Than 10 Years, City Council Told

After more than a decade of delays and setbacks, the former hospital in Greater Sudbury is finally on track for redevelopment. City council was informed on Monday that the process will not take 10 years as previously feared, but rather could be underway within five years.

Kevin Jarus, Tulloch Engineering planning manager, expressed optimism about the timeline for the project, which will see the construction of three buildings with over 500 units, including apartments, condominiums, and retirement guest suites. The development has been a long time coming, with initial plans facing obstacles such as planning appeals and changing market conditions.

The building gained attention when a local arts festival commissioned an artist to create the world’s largest mural on its walls. However, the mural has since deteriorated, prompting calls for the redevelopment to begin. Panoramic Properties, the owner of the property, finally announced their plans for redevelopment in August 2023.

City council members, including Coun. Joscelyne Landry-Altmann, expressed relief and excitement about the news. While construction details are still being finalized, Jarus mentioned that once construction begins, it could take 18 months to two years to complete.

The community is eagerly anticipating the transformation of the former hospital into a vibrant residential complex, bringing new life to the area after years of waiting. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting redevelopment project in Greater Sudbury.
