Express Scripts collaborates with CPESN USA to support independent pharmacies in delivering enhanced care services
Express Scripts, the pharmacy benefits services business of The Cigna Group’s Evernorth, has announced a new collaboration with CPESN USA, a network of pharmacy providers that deliver health services. This partnership aims to provide support to independent and community pharmacies, with a focus on enhancing care services for Medicare beneficiaries living with hypertension and diabetes.
According to internal data, diabetes affects roughly one in five Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years and up, while 64% of people with Medicare fee-for-service report having a diagnosis of hypertension. To address these health concerns, CPESN pharmacies will provide enhanced care services, including coordination with other health providers, pharmacist-led interventions for at-risk individuals, and informed medication management and optimization.
The collaboration between Express Scripts and CPESN USA is a result of guidance from the organization’s Independent Pharmacy Advisory Committee, which includes 38 pharmacists from all regions of the U.S. This initiative is part of Express Scripts’ IndependentRx Initiative, which aims to strengthen pharmacists’ role in delivering care and supporting small businesses.
Adam Kautzner, president of Evernorth Care Management and Express Scripts, emphasized the importance of local pharmacies in providing essential healthcare to communities. He stated, “Local pharmacies are the doorway to essential healthcare for many people, and independent pharmacies are critical to closing gaps in care for many communities.”
In addition to this collaboration, Express Scripts recently introduced a new pharmacy network option that offers “cost plus” drug pricing for employers and health plans. This model covers all brand, specialty, and generic medications on the client’s formulary, providing a more comprehensive pricing structure compared to other models in the market.
Overall, the partnership between Express Scripts and CPESN USA highlights the importance of independent pharmacies in delivering quality care to patients, especially those with chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. This collaboration aims to elevate the work of independent pharmacists and improve healthcare outcomes for individuals across the country.
