Update on clusters of Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae cases in Kwong Wah Hospital

Breaking news: Rise of Superbug Infections at Kwong Wah Hospital

In a recent update from Kwong Wah Hospital, it has been reported that there is a rise in superbug infections at the facility. The hospital confirmed that a cluster of patients has been identified as having Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in a surgical ward.

The spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital stated that two more male patients, aged 90 and 92, have been confirmed as carriers of CPE. These patients were transferred to Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital for further medical care in isolation on May 9 and May 11. Fortunately, they are currently in stable condition.

To address the situation, the hospital has implemented enhanced infection control measures in the ward, including enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures, stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene for staff and patients, as well as enhanced cleaning and disinfection for the environment and facilities of the ward.

The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation in the affected ward and has reported the case to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.

This development highlights the importance of vigilance in healthcare settings to prevent the spread of superbug infections and ensure the safety of patients and staff. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving situation.
