McLeod Health plans $45M replacement facility for Cheraw-based hospital

McLeod Health Plans $45 Million Replacement Facility for Cheraw Hospital

McLeod Health, based in Florence, South Carolina, has announced plans to construct a new $45 million replacement facility for its Cheraw-based hospital. The new facility will be built on the current McLeod Health Cheraw property, replacing the existing building that was constructed in 1980.

The decision to build the new facility comes after a recent bed-need analysis indicated a market need for at least 35 inpatient beds in the area. The construction plans will focus on expanding the emergency and radiology departments, with potential for additional facilities to be added as well.

McLeod Health assumed operation of the Chesterfield General Hospital in 2015 and plans to purchase the existing hospital and property for $5.8 million. Construction on the new hospital is expected to begin in 2024-2025.

The new facility will support the expansion of surgery, orthopedics, and other specialties, with plans to recruit additional surgeons, specialists, and primary care physicians. McLeod Health CEO Donna Isgett emphasized that the new building, along with advancements in technology and specialist recruitment, will enhance the hospital’s reputation and credibility among patients.

This construction project is part of a larger trend of major healthcare facilities investing in infrastructure upgrades. For example, Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh is undergoing a $1 billion transformation project to modernize its technology and care delivery capabilities.

McLeod Health Cheraw CEO Bren Lowe expressed excitement about the reinvestment in the community, stating that it will create a system for delivering high-quality healthcare in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties.

Overall, the construction of the new facility represents McLeod Health’s commitment to providing top-notch healthcare services to the region and solidifying its position as a leading healthcare provider.
