New Athens medical facility construction in progress

New Medical Facility Coming to Athens in 2024

Athens to Welcome New Medical Facility in 2024, Creating Jobs and Boosting Revenue

Athens, Ohio is set to welcome a new medical facility along Columbus Road in 2024, thanks to Memorial Health System. The facility is expected to create nearly 160 new jobs with an average salary of $130,000, contributing to the city’s general revenue through income taxes, according to Mayor Steve Patterson.

The City Council President, Sam Crowl, highlighted the importance of job creation in the city, as the income tax rate within Athens is 1.95%. The more jobs and higher paying jobs available, the more income tax the city will receive, Crowl explained.

The new medical facility is expected to cater to patients from various areas, including traffic off of US 33, state Route 13, and smaller villages like Glouster, Trimble, and Jacksonville. While the facility may not offer inpatient services like a traditional hospital, it aims to provide high-quality healthcare services close to home.

Construction of the facility began in Pennsylvania, with modules containing all the necessary fixtures for each room being shipped to Athens County. The four-story facility is projected to be completed in April, with a focus on creating a health hub in Southeastern Ohio.

Mayor Patterson expressed his desire to expand neonatal and pediatric services in Athens to reduce the need for residents to seek medical care in Columbus. Despite concerns about the city’s capacity to support additional healthcare services, officials are optimistic about the development along Columbus Road and the potential for growth in the area.

Overall, the new medical facility represents a significant investment in the healthcare infrastructure of Athens, with the potential to improve access to quality care for residents and create economic opportunities for the community.
