Analysis: Voting Patterns at the UN – Why Pacific Island Nations Supported Israel

In a recent United Nations vote, a vast majority of countries sided with the Palestinians in their quest for membership and rights. However, nine countries stood against this motion, including Israel, the United States, Hungary, Argentina, and the Czech Republic.

Israel’s firm stance against a Palestinian state, especially after recent attacks by Hamas, solidified its position against the Palestinian quest for UN membership. The United States, despite supporting a two-state solution, believes that negotiations should precede any UN vote on the matter.

Hungary’s alignment with Israel can be attributed to mutual interests and a close relationship between Prime Minister Orban and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Similarly, Argentina’s support for Israel stems from President Milei’s unwavering backing of Netanyahu and plans to move the Argentine embassy to Jerusalem.

The Czech Republic’s historical bond with the Zionist movement and strong pro-Israel stance since October further solidified its vote against the Palestinians. Interestingly, all Pacific Island nations, including Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, and Palau, also supported Israel in the UN vote.

These Pacific Island nations receive generous aid from Israel, leading to their support in international bodies. Israel’s strategic use of soft power diplomacy, including humanitarian aid and expertise in various fields, has helped secure votes and abstentions in its favor.

Despite the support from these countries, global opinion on the Palestinian issue remains overwhelmingly against Israel. The dynamics of geopolitics and mutual interests continue to shape international relations and voting patterns at the United Nations.
