New Location of Kitchener-Waterloo’s Newest Hospital Narrowed Down to Two Potential Sites
The search for the new location of Kitchener-Waterloo’s newest hospital has narrowed down to two potential sites, but the exact locations remain a mystery for now. The Site Selection Panel, consisting of five members, has approved two locations that are currently in the negotiation process to secure the land for the new hospital.
The panel has been working diligently since December 2023, reviewing three shortlisted properties with the help of various experts and community members. Panel chair Carl Zehr confirmed that the initial criteria of each property being at least 50 acres in size were met.
The announcement of the new hospital project was made in June 2022, with plans for a state-of-the-art acute care centre with 1,200 beds. The goal is to provide specialized care, such as neurology and neurosurgery, within the region to eliminate the need for patients to travel for treatment.
The current plan includes repurposing Grand River Hospital for ambulatory and urgent care services, while the Freeport Campus will be expanded for rehabilitation services. The future plans for St. Mary’s General Hospital have yet to be announced.
Stay tuned for further updates on the negotiation process, as the hospitals work towards securing the land for this groundbreaking project that will have a significant impact on the Kitchener-Waterloo community.
