Survey finds minimal improvement in nursing profession by 2024

Nurses’ Outlook for 2024: Survey Shows Concerns and Priorities

Nurses Express Concerns and Uncertainty for 2024, Survey Finds

A recent survey conducted by AMN Healthcare has revealed that a significant majority of nurses, at 80%, believe that 2024 will either be no better or worse for them than 2023. With 42% stating that 2024 will be the same as the previous year and 38% believing it will be worse, only 20% are optimistic that it will be better.

One of the most concerning findings of the survey is that over one-third of nurses (35%) stated that it is extremely likely that they will change jobs in 2024, with the majority (55%) also indicating that it is very likely or somewhat likely that they will do so. Additionally, 35% of nurses said it is extremely likely they will change their hours or schedules this year, with 58% stating they are extremely likely or somewhat likely to do so.

When asked about their priorities in the workplace for 2024, nurses highlighted better pay as the top concern, with 75% stating it is extremely important to them. This was followed by 68% who emphasized the importance of having more nurses per patient and 58% who highlighted the significance of better schedules.

Despite the challenges they face, only 37% of nurses believe their impact on the health and well-being of their patients has been extremely positive in 2024. When asked about their pride in being a nurse, a similar percentage (37%) said they are extremely proud, while 44% are moderately or somewhat proud.

The survey, which gathered responses from 1,155 nurses nationwide, has a margin of error of 3%. These findings reflect a larger trend in the nursing profession, with concerns about burnout, mental health issues, lack of support, and staffing shortages continuing to impact the workforce.

While 60% of nurses still love their profession, 62% are worried about the future. The ongoing nursing shortage, coupled with issues such as inadequate pay and poor working conditions, are contributing to high levels of dissatisfaction among nurses. Improving staffing ratios and increasing pay are seen as crucial steps to address these challenges.

As nurses navigate the uncertainties of 2024, it is clear that addressing their concerns and providing support will be essential in ensuring the well-being of both healthcare professionals and their patients.
